Tour de Midwest

After arriving home from our trip to Estes Park, Colorado, we quickly washed laundry and re-packed for our next adventure. Less than 48 hours later we were back in the suburban and headed southwest, the exact opposite direction of our last trip!

We took my niece, Nicole, along for the ride since we were headed to my Mom's and I knew it would be a treat for both of them to see each other. We left on a Tuesday evening and we didn't have a strict itinerary other than needing to be to my Aunt's house Friday evening for our family reunion.

Tuesday night we drove through Kansas City and snagged a motel for the evening. On the way we were able to view some of the devastating flooding that Nebraska is dealing with. In fact, we had to take a detour on the way home on Sunday as the highway was flooded by that point.

Wednesday morning after sleeping in a bit, we enjoyed a hot breakfast and then hit the road again. We stopped in Springfield, MO and had a picnic lunch before browsing through the Bass Pro Shops. Then it was back to the road and off to Yellville, Arkansas.

Our first picnic lunch. We stopped at Wal-mart and loaded up on healthy food and then pulled over when we spotted a huge shade tree in a business area. It was perfect!

We got a tour of my Mom's new home that they are remodeling and then they treated us to a yummy buffet dinner and took us to their Wednesday evening church service. Their congregation was so friendly and welcoming to us! We finally made it to their current house around 8 pm and popped up the camper for the evening.

Casey and Owen, my step-Dad, spent Thursday morning checking out the nearby lakes and planning future trips :) while my Mom and I visited and relaxed.

The kids had a blast feeding Grandpa Owen's chickens!

Then it was off to the next leg of our journey. We left mid-afternoon and headed for the Lake of the Ozarks. We left just in time, we got caught in the outskirts of a terrible thunderstorm, no fun on the winding, hilly roads while pulling a camper!

We stayed in our first RV camp, and absolutely loved it! We wish we could have stayed longer. That evening we took the kids to a local restaurant and then putt-putt golfing. We weren't too impressed with their behavior at the golf course, they literally were running through each hole and didn't seem to be enjoying it one bit. By the time we got them calmed down we were at the end! Over tired?!

While Casey set up the camper, we played at the campground park. It was the perfect place after being on the road for 2+ hours!

Don't let these smiles fool you. If I'd turned my back, I fear they would have been chucking these balls at each other (or me!)
Where do those balls keep going? This is me, taking away their golf clubs after each turn, trying to force them to slow down, take turns going first, and have fun. (Hey, I attempted anyways!)

Letting them beat out their frustrations, ha!

Peek-a-boo!

Friday morning we did some exploring! We toured a cave, which neither Casey or I had done before and it was so cool, our favorite part of the trip! It was during Chase's naptime, so he was super fussy and Kennedy was a little spooked, but there was only one other young family and they were in the same boat! Otherwise, the kids and all the adults loved it. We also went on a short hike and then visited some castle ruins.

Much happier after a good night's sleep.

There were several bridges on this one mile hike. It was the perfect length while we were waiting for the cave tour to begin. But it was super hot and muggy. We couldn't get in the cool dark cave fast enough!

No pictures allowed in the cave!

Another short hike to check out these castle ruins.

Quiet travels....The whole week, Chase only took one nap outside of his car seat, literally. I think he was beginning to believe that when he was buckled up it was nap time! He was our best little traveler, seriously!
After having another picnic lunch (so much cheaper than eating out!) we settled in for another long drive...off to the Iowa/Missouri border to meet up with my extended family.

Adventures in Estes Part 2

While in Estes, most of our time was spent hiking and hanging out at our huge cabin in the woods. But we took in a few touristy things too. Casey and I joked that we "ate" our souveniers. We aren't big tourist trap fans and the shops in Estes were pretty pricey in our opinion. We did splurge on some sweet treats though. We potlucked all of our meals, so we didn't feel too bad about paying the premium for ice cream cones, not only once, but twice!

We also stopped twice in the little town of Glen Haven that was half-way between Estes Park and our cabin. They have the.best.cinnamon.rolls.EVER. I would highly recommend looking them up if you're ever in the area!! The cherry cobbler wasn't bad either. (Yes, I have a mouthful of sweet teeth, not just one!)

So I had mentioned there was more to the hot tub story in my last post. Well the kiddos took full possession of the hot tub all three evenings. Since there was no swimming pool, it was the next best thing. By the morning of day three it wasn't looking too pretty. We should have taken that as a warning sign.

On our way home I got a call from our friends from Colorado that had just come to visit us for the last evening. Their kiddos had rashes on their hands and feet. Over the next two days, reports were flying around amongst all of the families and after several of the kiddos went to the doctor the diagnoses was: folicilitis. Hot tub rash. GROSS!!!

Thank goodness it wasn't something worse and it healed pretty quickly. My kids were banned from swimming for a week. Kyndal and Corbin were both victims. Kennedy, who only sat on the side of the tub didn't get it, but she did get a terrible case of what was diagnosed as hives on her hands and feet. Good thing they had a lot of fun getting those battle wounds!!

Even though the rash wasn't the kind of souvenier we would have chosen to take home, we had a great trip. The kids traveled very well considering how many miles we drove.

Friday afternoon after spending the morning hiking with the group and eating lunch, our family ventured into town by ourselves. This huge elk (above) was sitting in front of a store, literally in the middle of town!
We saw these huge slides (at Fun City) driving down the street and decided to check it out.
Going down! Kennedy was so excited, she was the first to run to the top, plopped down on her sack and was ready to go. Halfway down she was bawling and trying to stop, poor thing!
They were super slick!
Next up, a little putt-putt!
Our little guy, what a trooper!
On the way back to the cabin, we pulled off to explore at McGregor Ranch. We loved this little adventure. We could have paid to take the tour, but instead decided to explore on our own. It was our lucky day, the sweet lady below asked if our kids could help feed the chickens. She proceeded to give us a full tour of the ranch and told us the whole history of it. We were so appreciative!
On Saturday, once again after a morning of hiking, we headed back to town. We had a blast on the bumper boats and racecars.
We lost Corbin for a few minutes right before getting on the bumper boats. SUPER scary!!
Kyndal had a blast getting soaked!
Kennedy wanted nothing to do with getting soaked. She was not happy when she got squirted on the side.
Corbin and I took a spin around the track!

We will most definitely be going back to Estes!

Adventures in Estes Part 1

Round two, or I should say road trip #2 of the summer. Several months ago we started planning an annual summer camping trip and decided to head someplace new. We'd never camped in Colorado before and every year we and several other families meet up for a few days of fun. Estes Park was the destination this year and we were talked into renting a condo instead of camping. Sounded just fine to me...I honestly don't mind camping, but am the first to admit that it's a little more difficult with a baby that is now VERY mobile and likes to put everything in his mouth.

So we came across this HUGE 5,000 square foot condo with 6 bedrooms, 2 full kitchens, hot tub and it was in the middle of nowhere. Literally. We couldn't get our bags packed fast enough!

We convinced Casey's Mom to ride along with us and spend the 4-day weekend in Denver with her best friend, Kay. It was awesome to have an extra adult in the suburban to help "entertain" on the way up and back!

Before we knew it we had 6 families with 11 adults and 15 kids lined up for our big adventure. It didn't take long for the kids to figure out that they outnumbered us! They took over the hot tub and no adults set foot in it (more on that later.)

We headed for the mountains on a Wednesday afternoon...we drove straight through to Denver to our good friends, Kay and Mike's. We crashed there for the night and slept in. The kids had a blast the next morning playing with all of her grandkids toys! We wish we would have planned a full day there, it was hard to leave.

Mike and Kay have a beautiful home and such a nice open space outside. They are so generous and we always feel right at home there. We are looking forward to them coming to visit us for a Husker game this fall.
Kennedy and Kay's grandson, Dane. Crazy girl behind the wheel!
We left late morning and took the short and scenic drive to Estes. Our condo was about 10 miles out of Estes and the roads were crazy sharp and curvy. The driveway was super steep and narrow with a terrible drop-off, but it was so beautiful! We could barely see our nearest neighbor, on the next hill. We immediately jumped out of the car and went exploring.

One other family beat us to the house and gave us the grand tour. It was seriously easy to get lost in this place, it was huge! And the new owners had just remodeled part of it. We were so excited that we landed this place, there was more than enough room for our crazy crews. Lots of room for privacy and for socializing....which we all did plenty of.

After a couple more families showed up and we had gotten unpacked, Casey and I and Chase headed back to town to pick up groceries for the meal we were assigned to prepare. It was nice to be in charge of one meal and to relax and enjoy the rest. While we were gone a couple of the adults and some of the kids (including ours) went exploring around our house. Corbin took a little tumble but was fine and luckily one of the adults was leading....a rattlesnake crossed their path, EEK! Fortunately it was the only one spotted all weekend.

Here is the whole crew!!! This is before one of the several hikes that was taken. That was the main activity we did, lots and lots and LOTS of hiking! We took some amazing trails...and took so many pictures. Our kids did amazingly well and no major injuries to report. Here are just a few pictures to share. My next post will include some of the other fun we had on the trip.

"Entering Travel Zone" ....I loved this sign since it describes our month so perfectly!!

It wasn't long before each of the kids had claimed their own walking stick.

Chase spent a lot of time in this backpack carrier!
