Spring "Break"

Kyndal and Corbin were on spring break last week...but Corbin's didn't start off very well. In fact, he literally put the "break" in his spring break....

I missed the call from his school the last day of school before the break began and just two days after he had earned his dirt bike. When I got back to my office 20 minutes later I found I had also missed two calls from Casey. That wasn't a good sign.

Moments later I was headed to Roper; Corbin had fallen off the climbing wall part of their playground structure and hurt his arm. Casey was actually at a new doctor at the same time and they invited us to bring Corbin there for x-rays.

The x-rays confirmed it was broken, which brought his only tears. He was such a tough little guy, very protective and scared but no tears even when he fell!

We were blessed to secure an excellent orthopedic surgeon here in town, otherwise we would have headed to the Children's Hospital down the road. Later in the week I discovered he is the team doctor for Nebraska Wesleyan sports, the Saltdogs baseball team and the Stars hockey team. Corbin was pretty excited about that fact!
It is so hard to see your child hurting, one of the worst feelings in the world.

He didn't get into surgery until 8 pm, needless to say, it was a long evening in the ER trying to comfort him. He was quite a trooper! We also had Chase with us (so blessed that they were both so mellow that evening!!) The pictures aren't the best...cell phone quality!Surgery only took about 30 minutes, but seemed like hours. Unfortunately there was a piece of muscle between the broken bone pieces so the doctor was unable to set it externally like he had hoped. A small incision was made and 3 pins inserted to set it. It went very well and it wasn't long before we were moved into his room for the night. Casey camped out with Corbin and they watched movies and ate popsicles for a few hours :o)

Saturday morning I took the girls (anxious to see poor Corbin) and Chase to the hospital to hang out until he got released. We stopped by our favorite store to get him some get well gifts (legos of course!)
He was sooooo happy to have some real food for breakfast! The last thing he'd eaten was lunch the day before.
His first few days at home proved pretty challenging for him. He didn't trust his sling to hold his arm so he graciously allowed his Mommy to do every little thing for him (she didn't mind!) Finally on Monday evening I convinced (bribed) him to let go of his arm while it was in the sling to use the restroom by himself. As much as I would have loved to spend the week at home with him, it was best for all of us to try to regain some normalcy. So Tuesday it was off to the Y for him. Each day he got a little more confident with what he could handle by himself.

On Friday afternoon we headed to his doctor to get his soft cast removed, x-rays and RED hard cast put on. He was so excited.... and then they took the bandages off and exposed the pins, which he didn't know existed. Of course he was watching the whole thing and instantly was sick at the sight of the incision/pins. Poor guy, I felt so terrible for him :(
Excited for his new cast!
Removing the soft cast
Hard cast going on
Much happier now that it's all covered back up!

Once the casting began he felt much better, I think he felt more protected and confident. He let me sign his cast right away but surprisingly it was a couple days before he let anyone else near it!

He had quite a story to share with his friends back at school following his spring "break" week!

He is tough, my goodness. Hopefully he will be fully recovered by summer!
